Dr John Newton was appointed as the Principal of Scotch College Adelaide in January 2015. John, his wife Catherine and two of his children moved to Adelaide from England at the beginning of that year. Prior to his appointment at Scotch, John had been the Headmaster of Taunton School, an independent, coeducational boarding school in Somerset, since January 2005. Educated at The Manchester Grammar School (UK), John is a graduate of Merton College, Oxford with a degree in French and Russian. 

John has a PhD in the 'Organisational Culture of Independent Schools' and has immersed himself in independent schooling for the last three decades, including serving as Director of Studies and Housemaster at Eastbourne College, and Head of Modern Languages at Bradfield College in Berkshire. Since being in South Australia, he has spent over 3 years as a member of The Executive Connection, Group 13, and meets with the top CEOs from Adelaide on a monthly basis. He has shared his research on organisational culture with them, providing insight and practical applications for all types of institutions.

Catherine has just taken up her studies in midwifery at the University of South Australia, and John's youngest child currently attends Y12 at Scotch. His three older children are based in the UK. Two are in work and one is at university, and is still, she claims, `on the parent payroll’…
